DIY Our Simple Guide
Can you build it? Yes you can!
As all our furniture is flat packed this is quite a pertinent issue. Some of us find the thought of doing it ourselves quite scary but with the right planning and preparation there is no reason why we cannot, sometimes with a little help, construct anything from a small bedside table to a large wardrobe.
Follow these simple guidelines and you will find that you most definitely can build it!
HAVE ENOUGH SPACE.
Make sure the area you want to build the furniture is as clear as possible. Small items don’t need much space but larger items do so move as much furniture and clutter as you can out of the room before you start.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
If they say 2 people are required to assemble your goods make sure you have someone else there to help you. Make sure the person who helps is prepared for the job, tempers can fray and stress levels rise even on a smaller assembling job so make sure you are happy to work with the person you choose.
CHECK YOU HAVE ALL PARTS.
Unpack all your parts and fixings and carefully check them off. Put screws, hinges, nuts and bolts into separate bowls so you can easily identify numbers and sizes. It is also a good idea to lay a sheet or the packaging on the floor before you unpack. This helps protect your flooring and keeps things in one place.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL THE TOOLS AND TIME NEEDED.
Things will go more smoothly if you don’t have to keep nipping to your tool shed to find a flat head screwdriver or drill bit. Make sure you have allowed yourself enough time to do the job, if the instructions say allow 2 hours with 2 people allow 2 – 3 hours and make sure you have help.
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.
Did we mention this? It is amazing how many people do not and end up with a base upside down or insufficient numbers of a certain screw because they did not prepare and used one in the wrong place. Instructions are there to help you and a few moments getting this right will make sure your assembly goes smoothly.
WORK METHODICALLY.
Take your time. Check each piece is correctly sited and aligned before fixing into place, do not rush, take things one step at a time. Remember that wood glue can take up to 24 hours to dry and set, do not over tighten hinges or screws until you are sure the items are properly aligned, straight or open and close properly.
Remember there is a lot of help out there, from web pages offering thoughtful advice to video tutorials on YouTube. The sense of pride and satisfaction on successful completion of your self-assembly project cannot be under estimated. We want you to enjoy what you have bought and love how it looks and contributes to your home, but remember if doing it yourself seems like an impossible task or you do not have the time we offer a very reasonable home assembly service!
